Entry Information and Qualifications

The Competition: The 2018 RevUp ShenCo competition will provide more impactful, marketing specific education and support for current, for-profit businesses and tourism generating organizations in Shenandoah County. Five classroom style sessions will focus on teaching the importance of branding, marketing and will dive deep into social media marketing. The sessions will be hosted by marketing industry experts yet tailored to the needs of a small business that can benefit exponentially from creative and consistent marketing practices. Participants will submit a final marketing plan after the five week sessions which will be reviewed by a panel of judges who are unbiased business professionals and experts in the Valley. The final decision on winners of the prize money available in their locality will be made by the judges.

Prize: Winners will receive up to $5,000 made payable to the business. It is the judge’s discretion to split the funding allotted in a particular area should two plans prove equally eligible for the money. Funding for businesses located in the following areas is available in the following amounts:

  • a.      Shenandoah County/ Toms Brook/ New Market: $5,000
  • b.      Town of Strasburg: $5,000
  • c.      Town of Woodstock: $5,000
  • d.      Town of Edinburg: $5,000
  • e.      Town of Mount Jackson: $5,000

Additionally, one winner will be chosen to receive a Shenandoah County Chamber of Commerce 2018 Gold Level Annual Sponsorship. 


Attendance: Each participant is required to attend all five (5) sessions to be eligible
for the prize money. Business owners are highly encouraged to attend but managers of the business/organization are permitted to attend in place of the business owner.

Size: Small to medium sized business/organization with no more than 50 employees.

Business status:

  • Each participant must be an existing for-profit business or tourism generating organization that is in full, continuous operation and/or or has a business license.
  • Tax ID number must be provided on the application. Base of operations must take place in Shenandoah County.
  • Only Shenandoah County businesses in good standing (ie: up to date on taxes and business licenses with no violations) are eligible for prize money.

Marketing Plan Format: Competition sponsors and session leaders will guide participants along the way using a marketing plan template that is highly encouraged to be used for final submission.


  • A group of no more than 5 business and marketing professionals will individually review
    and judge final marketing plans over a period from Monday, November 12 to Friday, November 16, 2018. During this time, judges will meet as a group to discuss and determine the final winners and the appropriate amount to be awarded to each.
  • Scoring and comments from judges will be accessible to all participants following the announcement of winners upon request.
  • Competition sponsors will have no input through the entire judging process so as to eliminate any potential conflicts of interest.
  • Should a business/organization owner/investor/member be a relative of any of the judges, that judge will not be permitted to review, comment or judge that participants plan. Any judge with a conflict of interest shall excuse him/herself.
