  Leap of Kindness Day February 29, 2020

  What will you do with an extra day?

  

  What will you do with the extra day we all get this Leap Year, on Saturday, February 29, 2020?

  Our idea - - take part in Leap of Kindness Day and do something kind for someone else.

  To help you participate, we reached out to local nonprofits in Shenandoah County and asked them for some ideas. While you can wait to deliver any items you might donate, we encourage everyone to start collection activities within your workplace or organization as soon as possible to maximize your participation and community impact.

  We are also inviting our members and other local organizations to share with us their own creative ideas for participating in Leap of Kindness Day this year.

  Here's what our local nonprofits are requesting:

  Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints: Check out justserve.org to find where volunteers are needed throughout the County.
  

  Community Care & Learning Center Child Care: They are in need of peanut butter, fresh fruit (oranges, tangelos, apples, bananas), individual size healthy snacks (granola bars, craisins, fruit cups, etc), soft tortillas, baby carrots, ranch dressing/dip, pretzels, and large size cans of chicken noodle or vegetable soup.

  Friends of the North Fork of the Shenandoah River:  Make a Leap of Kindness with Friends this year by cleaning up Hudgin's Rest, a river "rest stop" near Maurertown.  Work will include brush clearing and pruning from 9am to noon for a maximum of six volunteers. Please RSVP to  friends@fnfsr.org or 459-8550. Volunteers will meet at the Friends office. An optional social lunch will follow the workday. Your Leap will go a long way as this project will prepare for further planned improvements to the site.

  Humane Society of Shenandoah County (HSSC): Donations of pet food and drop it off at Tractor Supply or Shenandoah Animal Hospital
  

  Just Because: Provides quarterly goodie bags to show kindness and appreciation to the 900 teachers and staff of Shenandoah County schools.  They are in need of cough drops, large hand sanitizers, large boxes of tissues, wipes, bandaids and anything else you want to add to the list.

  Response: Could use all-purpose floor cleaner, heavy-duty 33 gallon trash bags, and laundry detergent for the shelter. Items may be left on the Shelter's porch.

  Shenandoah County SEARCH, Inc. A Group Home for adults with
  intellectual challenges. Our staff doesn't have extra time to do some of the needed things outside the home.  The outside flowerbeds and our walking path in the back yard could use some weeding/edging, as well as cleaning up fallen limbs, etc. Importantly, if someone could replace the screws on our entrance ramp that would be awesome.  It is difficult to hire folks to do a small job. Currently the screws are working loose and becoming a tripping hazard.  The residents use this ramp to enter and leave the home.  We are a non-profit supported by our SEARCH Thrift Shop in Mt.   Shenandoah County will host Service & Sacrifice 75, an event commemorating the 75^th anniversary of the end of World War II, April 17-19, 2020. The highlight of the weekend among many, will be a formal recognition of those who served in the military during WW II, as well as those who sacrificed at home.

  Retired Lt. General Ben Freakley, author Austin Gisriel, and historical illustrator Keith Rocco are organizing the event and are eager for veterans who wish to be recognized to contact them.

  “It is important to recognize what these men and women did 75 years ago,” said General Freakley. “It’s important for them and for us. I want my grandchildren to be able to tell their grandchildren, ‘I met someone who helped save the world,’ and that’s exactly what our veterans did.”

  “The National D-Day Memorial in Bedford held what they deemed ‘The Final Salute,’ at which they recognized veterans on the 75^th anniversary of D-Day,” added Gisriel. “This is really our last opportunity to recognize our area vets as a group.”

  Military veterans who served during World War II and who wish to be recognized are asked to send their name, all contact information (address, phone number, and e-mail address), unit, rank, and citations to the committee at Service & Sacrifice 75, P.O. Box 779, Woodstock, VA 22644 or to e-mail the committee at servicesacrifice75@gmail.com Please also include, where applicable, the contact information for anyone who will make arrangements for the veterans to be recognized.

  Civilians who worked in defense plants, served in any militia or Civilian Defense forces, participated in scrap drives or bond drives, or simply kept the home fires burning are asked to provide their contact information and a brief description of their service.

  Registrants will receive confirmation and instructions in March.

  “America was at its best during that time,” said Rocco. “Perhaps this event will, in some small way, inspire us to achieve our best as neighbors and as citizens.”

  Service & Sacrifice 75 will be held on the campus of the Massanutten Military Academy.
